  8. This documentation describes in detail how to convert TrueType fonts from MS Windows to MacOS Central European. The converted fonts will contain also the Croatian special letter ‘dj’, which is usually missing from MacCE fonts.

  29. The system extension QuickDraw GX is required by the program FuseCMAP but can be disabled or removed afterwards.

  32. What to do?

  34. (1)  Map PC files with extension “.TTF” to TTConverter files (creator “TTCv”) in your Internet Config, PC Exchange, etc. preferences. The file type doesn’t matter — I suggest “BINA”. Alternatively, use a utility like FileTyper (info-mac/disk/file-typer-531.hqx) to set file type and creator.

  36. (2)  Expand the font archives (*.EXE) with StuffIt Expander. Alternatively, run these programs on a PC and transfer the resulting font files (*.TTF) to your Mac.

  38. (3)  Start TTConverter and make sure that the options “Create Suitcases”, “Compress Font Names”, and “Use Style Info” are selected.

  40. (4)  Open an MS Windows TTF file with TTConverter. Click on “Customize FOND…”.

  42. • Choose a number from the Central European range, 30720–31231, as “Family ID”. Use the same number for all styles (plain, italic, bold, bold italic) in a family. [30720, 30723, and 3072 are already taken for the Chicago CE, Geneva CE, and Monaco CE.]

  44. • Write “ CE” after the “Family Name”; for example, “Times New Roman CE”.

  46. • Check “Bold” if you have a bold font; check “Italic” if you have an italic font; check both if you have a bold italic font.

  48. • Normally you should not bother about the other options: click on “OK”.

  50. Save your converted font.

  52. Repeat step (4) for all fonts in a family.

  54. (5)  [Optional — not technically necessary]  Open the suitcases containing the italic, bold, and bold italic fonts with ResEdit. Rename the ‘sfnt’ resources (menu “Resource : Get Resource Info”) by writing “ Italic”, “ Bold”, and “ Bold Italic”, respectively, after the name.

  56. (6)  Drag the suitcases containing the italic, bold, and bold italic fonts onto the suitcase containing the plain font.

  58. (7)  Open the font suitcase with FuseCMAP and choose a font. Next open the file CE cmap. When asked “Which encoding should I replace?”, choose “Macintosh”.

  60. Repeat step (7) for all fonts in the suitcase.

  62. (8)  You can find keyboard layouts and international resources in “Eudora Central/East Europe”  (info-mac/comm/inet/mail/edr/eudora-centeast-europe-12.hqx).
